Five pupils from Broomfield School pitted their wits against online Zoom teams from Channing School and Chingford Foundation School in a regional Mace debating tournament run by the English Speaking Union in January.
The motion was “This House would ban job applicants from disclosing the names of educational institutions they have attended.” Vasili led the debate with a very impressive seven-minute-long Proposing introduction. This was followed by Isaac who added an eloquent seven-minute-long riposte to counter the Opposition speeches. George wrapped up the debate with a third powerful speech. The virtual floor debate was equally engaging with excellent contributions from Niki and David. The team also stepped up to the plate spontaneously to counter Channing School’s team after their planned opponents were unable to attend. Our team learned a lot from this challenging experience, especially as the other debaters were in year 10 or above!
